Trade, Piracy and Colonialism – Severndroog Retellings Walk Workshop – Third Retellings Walk BH365 celebration

July 12 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Third Interlinked Walk on 12 July –  Severndroog Retellings – Trade, Piracy and Colonialism (3.30pm-5.30pm) BOOK

Join us on this short exploratory walk with musical interludes in the woods around Severndroog Castle. We meet and congregate at cafe entrance to Severndroog Castle from 3.30pm. The short walk led by Frances Calliste, will make a wooded circuit  – exploring some of the contested or hidden stories behind the construction of the Castle, and its complex history.

O Mother, my mother, cruel mother country,
How sweetly your siren-song sounds o’er the sea!
If it weren’t for your arms, an orphan I’d be,
O mother, my mother, cruel mother country.’
(Angeline Morrison – Cruel Mother Country)

Strolling around Oxleas Woods with musical, poetic and thoughtful interludes. We will delve in deeper to the history behind Severndroog, making links to trade, piracy, pirate radio and much more! Through song, music and story-telling, we explore together other histories that mirror a post-colonial retelling of the past. Stay tuned for more info! Refreshments will be available.

InspiralLondon’s Songlines for Greenwich creates a unique day of polyphonic shared exploration and walking for Black History 365 celebrations.

This walking event links up different parts of the Borough, to explore Black Lives – unique reclaimed stories and hidden histories – located in Greenwich’s diverse landscape. On these walks you will experience and celebrate unexplored Black History hidden in Greenwich’s historic building, its ghost traces, in writing and poetry, or found buried in the cityscape.

We welcome all to this day of interlinked walks that celebrate Black history and culture within Greenwich as we traverse the Borough from Motterham to Woolwich. We will stop on the way for performances, talks and celebratory retellings – with partners including Severndroog Castle, and Clockhouse Community Centre.

Retellings – Songlines for Greenwich has been generously supported by The Royal Borough of Greenwich and Tfl WalkingCyclingGrantLondon.
