Distant Sounds of Migration. Part of BH365 celebrations 2024-2025
On Saturday 24 May – Meet 2pm at the entrance of Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Free BOOK HERE
A Short Walk celebrating migration, exchange and other listening in the city, in collaboration with Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park, taking a leisurely walk to visit other nearby green diverse ecological spaces – to share other fun and informative ways to see the city and its different inhabitants.
Working with the Friends of Ecology Park and other walking groups, this exploratory workshop investigates the relationship between urban soundscape, environment and the way that people share open space. The walk starts with a short introduction to the fascinating feats of bird migration – looking for the three main visitors to the UK from Africa that use the wetlands, along the riverside, which might include: African Terns, a variety of marten or swift, and African reed warblers.
Why do they travel so far, up the Thames Estuary and where do they actually come from? Much of this remains a mystery but in Late Spring as the leaves unfurl and insects busy themselves multiplying their activity a variety of migrating birds come, feed and breed. With longer days and an intensity of green flowering the birds take advantage of the welcome refuge at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park. For this event we continue to take a birds’ eye perspective of travel, exchange and interaction… and trace a new history of migration and exchange.
The walk as part of Black History 365 celebrations celebrates migration and the introduction of plants, people and customs from the Caribbean and from Africa – all parts of the rich diversity supported in the Boroughs networks – as a place of Sanctuary and of inter-migration. This walk event is made in partnership with Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Centre.
