The Beautification Committee – InspiralLondon Map 1 (Part of Segment 6 Trail)

“The cultivation of beautiful trees is a civic duty…” The Beautification Committee (in Rotherhithe, London) was launched in 1920 by Ada Salter. The InspiralLondon Trail (Segment 6) follows a route from Peckham to Surrey Quays passing by a number of trees planted in the 1920’s and this phamphlet maps the mature poplar trees along the way. Some of the most beautiful specimens have been felled since 2018, so the map acts as a memorial to this unique period in Southwark’s history.
