SUMMARY:Dartford to Gravesend with artist Susie Bear
DESCRIPTION:Trail from Dartford to Gravesend with artist Susie Bear \nAnother unique InspiralLondon unique watery commons exploration through South London to the origins of the in/spiral\n \n“We shall not cease from exploration \nAnd the end of all our exploring \nWill be to arrive where we started \nAnd know the place for the first time.” (TS Eliot – from Little Gidding) \nSign up here \nA new entanglement of the UEL Art Foundation encounter with InspiralLondon as part of their continuing Cultural Landscapes walks: “This process based student project is an example of how intuitive research can enfold us into a material tapestry of collective understanding” Dr Mikey Georgeson. \nThe Thames footpath leads from Dartford (Bridge Development) down to Gravesend\, passing through the old Littlebrook power station site\, down to Greenhithe (Ingress Park)\, where there is plenty of historical sites to encounter. We will then wind our way through the conservation area – Botany Marsh Northfleet (to the south part of Swanscombe Marsh peninsula). Swanscombe marsh recently became a SSSI protected by Natural England as one of the most bio-diverse parts of the city’s watery commons. Home of rare invertbrates like the jumping spider.  Swanscombe Marsh also retains the ghostly memory of our prehistoric origin. \nThe route then becomes quite industrial wending through Northfleet before reaching Gravesend and the Statue of Princess Pocahontas. We will finish at Gravesend Leisure area where there are plenty of places for refreshments – near to the train station.  Gravesend has excellent train links back to London. This walk will take around four hours including stops. \nThis exploratory Hydrodetour is a collaboration between InspiralLondon and UEL Visual Arts foundation. \nWith thanks to Susie Bearman\, UEL Foundation and Dr. Mikey Georgeson. \n \nMeet at Dartford Station 1.30pm on Saturday 30th October for short bus ride to start walk. \nFinish approx. 5pm near to Gravesend Station. \nPlease come prepared for weather conditions and wear good walking boots/shoes. It is worth bringing light refreshments and water. Please sign up our eventbrite – donations welcome. \n \nImages: Susie Bear 2021

SUMMARY:Mollett and Morris’ Hydra-detour Lampshow
DESCRIPTION:Mollett and Morris’ Hydra-detour Lampshow (Meet at Thames-side Gallery from 6pm on Sunday 26 September 2021) \n \nRoll up! Roll up! Ladies and Gentlemen! Boy and Girls! For Mollett & Morris Hydra-Tour Lampshow.\nYour hosts Frog Morris and Nicole Mollett will use the ancient wizardry of magic lantern to conjure up fantastical tales of monsters\, forgotten places and satirical humour. You will not believe the wonders that await you in the watery nooks and crannies of the old Naval Docks… \nPrior to the COVID-19 lockdown\, M & M had been developing a series of guided night walks in Gravesend and Ebbsfleet using hand-held magic lanterns adapted with modern battery powered LED light to project outdoors onto pavement\, tunnels\, walls and buildings. During these lampshows we recreated the lost Rosherville Pleasure Gardens with exotic plants and animals and surprising guest appearances by long lost music hall entertainers such as – Little Titch’s Big Boot Danc or Shrimp impersonator Herr Von Joel. For Woolwich we create a similar guided walk inspired by the water-rich history of this Naval area – War Ships\, Explorers\, Merchants and Buccaneers\, at one time they all passed this way searching for adventure. \n \nA live performance walking tour to take place outdoors after dark\, meeting at an agreed time. The performance can involve audience interaction making sound effects and using small handheld projectors. We will assess the safety of this and make changes dependent on the COVID risk-levels. The lanterns project images 1m – 3m in height from a distance or 2 – 3m. \nThe Art of the Magic Lantern is a collaborative live art project by Nicole Mollett and Frog Morris which re-purposes pre-cinema projection equipment to create new live performance pieces for contemporary audiences. Hand painted illustrations and Victorian-era photographs are projected into dark spaces accompanied by live storytelling. \nTimes: 6.30-8pmish Sunday 26 September \nDeparture Point: Thames-side Gallery\, Thames-Side Studios\, Harrington Way\, Warspite Road\, Royal Borough of Greenwich\, London\, SE18 5NR. \nEnd; near Woolwich Foot Tunnel – short walk through old Naval Dock Yards to finish near Fish and chips/ Woolwich Arsenal DLR station \nMore on Lampshow website

SUMMARY:Watery Woolwich – London’s Celtic Omphalos
DESCRIPTION:Watery Woolwich – London’s Celtic Omphalos (18 September 11am-1.30pm)\nJoin InspiralLondon’s Director and Sailor Forbes for an Hydrodetour exploration of London’s watery genesis\, around Woolwich Thameside. Starting from Thames-side Studios Gallery 11 am near to the Thames Barrier – nearest station Woolwich Docklands or Woolwich Arsenal DLR. \nA walk that will see the ghostly re-appearance of Sailor Forbes returning from the National Maritime Museum. \n \nAround the millennium\, on the edge of Woolwich’s secret city\, a new chapter of London’s history was once again being hurriedly re-buried\, under the footings being explored near to the Thames. Here on the site of the demolished Woolwich Power Station\, Sailor Forbes will guide you on a tour of London’s true centre\, the Celtic Omphalos of the pre-Roman City complex lost beneath the destructive power of this ‘civilising’ Empire. Before this glassy empire of Riverside apartments\, lay a network of pathways and waterways linking another culture\, looking out\, far and long\, down the Thames Delta toward Europe. \nSearching among the re-landscaped ground between Beresford Street and the wall of the Thames flood defences you can look up at the rising ground above the Woolwich Ferry\, near the foot tunnel exit\, and see the promontory of St Mary Magdalene Church Yard. Or turn and gaze to the East the rising ground of old Woolwich. Undoubtedly this location on the Thames\, looking out to sea\, was an ideal site for a major settlement. Located on the last stretch of river before the more unpredictable surging tide around the narrowing bend of the Isle of Dogs that low marshy ground\, formerly known as Stebunheath\, you can see far out along the Thames Delta. Alongside other oppida – on the reaches of the River Roding and those yet to be located – this walk reimagines London’s history through the lens of watery commons. And recreates a complex mapping of settlements entirely independent of the Roman foundation of London the City- as the original centres of a Celtic metropolis along the Thames – and as one part of the Druid’s geometrical mapping of Europe. \n‘Because of the constant threat from treasure-hunters\,’ the discovery had been kept secret since 1986…(now) the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit could reveal that ‘a major fortified settlement’ had been discovered on the Woolwich Power Station site: Constructed about 250 BC\, centuries before the foundation of the City of Londinium by the Romans\, this major site on the south bank of the River Thames controlled the river for over 200 years. …The complete defensive circuit would have enclosed an area of at least 15-17 acres… dominated a wide area and was effectively the capital of the London Basin for part of the Iron Age.’ (quoted from Graham Robb’s The Ancient Paths- Discovering the Lost map of Celtic Europe\, 2013: 260-261) \n \nTimes: 11am -1.30pm Saturday 18 September. \nDeparture Point: Thames-side Gallery \nThames-Side Studios\nHarrington Way\, Warspite Road\nRoyal Borough of Greenwich\nLondon\, SE18 5NR. \nEnd Point near to ; Woolwich Arsenal DLR station – mainline\n21 Greens End\, Woolwich\nLondon\, SE18 6JY \nFor this walk of approximately 2 miles\, we will meet at Hydracity exhibition space at Thames-Side Gallery\, then walk along the Thames path to Woolwich Foot Tunnel; to then explore beneath the waterside redevelopments of Royal Arsenal\, another watery geography suggested by recent archaeological findings and the shifting silt of the Thames. \nThe walk will finish near the centre of Woolwich where you can find lunch or refreshments. Please bring suitable clothes and shoes for the walk\, and depending on the weather conditions\, suncream or water proofing. \n \n

SUMMARY:Urban Sound Ecology investigations Hydro/detour- Greenwich Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Urban Sound and Hydrodetour Ecology is walk led by Soundcamp SC\, in partnership with Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Centre \nMeeting: 12 noon at Thames-Side Studios Gallery\, Thames-Side Studios (Harrington Way\, Warspite Road Royal Borough of Greenwich SE18 5NR) \nThis is a unique opportunity to visit one of London’s most intriguing ecology parks (a set of specially created ponds by the River Thames) while being introduced to the sound world broadcast through soundcamp’s pioneering work. \nMeet at Hydracity exhibition to listen to soundcamp’s live streaming and then walk along the Thames Pathway to arrive at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park (1pm )\, to meet staff for a tour of the site and investigate the sound ecology streaming potential of this remarkable aquatic site. \nFrom 2pm-4pm Streambox workshop and install with possible Hydrophonic listening of pond ecosystems. \nThis is a walk for anyone discover the unique ecology park at Greenwich Peninsula and encounter the possibilties of sound ecology to inspire and share other sensory experiences. \nSC are an arts cooperative based in London\, Crete and the The Hague. Work explores intersections among social\, personal and environmental ecologies. SC initiated the Creative Europe small cooperation project: Acoustic Commons (2020-22)\, in partnership with arts organisations in Europe and Japan. Projects include the annual Reveil daybreak broadcast (3.3 million Twitter impressions on #Reveil2020)\, Biosphere Open Microphones (BIOM – with UNESCO) and PITCH – a project on indigenous soundworlds in development with Museum of the UN / UN Live. \nFor the workshop soundcamp will be setting up an experimental soundbox at Ecology Centre. \nFor more info on Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Centre – https://thelandtrust.org.uk/space/greenwich-ecology-park/ \n \n  \n \nAs a remote part of Hydracity Soundcamp (SC) will install an off-grid streambox or ‘Barking Box’ at Beckton Creek\, London\, where the river Roding discharges into the Thames. The device will relay live sounds to a public online platform\, where listeners can exchange impressions and responses to the stream\, via IRC chat. This will be the basis for a series of virtual and face to face listening events\, generating an extended text record of audio observations over a year.   \nThe site includes close associations and interactions between ‘natural’ features such as reedbeds\, watercourses and tidal mudflats\, and ‘cultural’ or ‘industrial’ features such as recycling\, ‘strip out’ and waste handling facilities\, the largest sewage works in Europe and the abandoned Beckton Gasworks\, where soil contamination has blocked development. Together these elements form significant edgeland habitats\, and a mix of aquatic and terrestrial ecologies.\n\nThe stream will be presented\, together with contextual materials\, as part of Hydracity in late 2021. The ‘flat ontological’ presentation of sound objects developed for the proposal will be extended into a series of large works for the wall at the Thames Studios gallery\, bringing together text and other documentation generated remotely and in situ. \n\nBarking Box continues SC’s long standing interest in using real-time sound and collective listening to tune into lesser known places and environmental objects that resist straightforward description and classification. The provisional flattening of values in relation to the site creates a space for new hearings and interpretations to emerge.\n\n\n\nThese Walk is part of Hydracity 2021-2022: \nHydrodetours Walks are integral part of InspiralLondon’s larger Hydracity project\, to explore and map the hidden\, lost or undervalued watery commons of London and the Thames Valley Delta. \nFrom September 10 – 26 September visit HYDRACITY\, an exhibition featuring the work of collectives\, community groups\, local and international artists\, all exploring this watery commons\, together. \nThames-Side Gallery (Harrington Way\, Warspite Road Royal Borough of Greenwich SE18 5NR) \nFriday 10 September 2021\, 6-9pm Exhibition opening events (all welcome) \nExhibition open Saturday Saturday 11th – Sunday 26th September 2021 \nOpening times: Thursday-Sunday\, 12 – 5pm Except Sunday 26 September open late to 6pm.

SUMMARY:Branches of the Wogebourne - Hydrodetour
DESCRIPTION:Branches of the Wogebourne with J D Swann\nSaturday 11th September Starting at: 11am Welling Station (Zone 4).\nFinishing: at Southmere Lake\, Thamesmead – then 1km walk to Abbey Wood Station (Zone 4)\n11 kilometres walk – 4 hours (approx)\n8+ under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult \n\nInspiralLondon’s resident ornithological investigator J D Swann will lead a walk along a possible route of the lost Wogebourne river\, its source emerged from Oxleas Wood on Shooters Hill\, the highest point in Greater South London at 132 metres. It was called in 14th century manuscripts the Wogebourne or Woghbourne becoming widely known as Plumstead River in the following centuries. However\, by the 1970’s much of the river had been enclosed just as the Westbourne had been in West London or the Fleet in the City; it had then become the Wickham Valley Waterway\, shifting names for a mysterious watercourse. \nObservation of wildlife will be encouraged as we pass through Shrewsbury Park and East Wickham Open Space. There the Wogebourne branches between and under Plumstead housing towards Abbey Wood Station\, it was exposed there during the construction of Crossrail in 2015 (opening 2018 and counting) where it is referred to in plans as a stormwater drain. The branch we will be following is through Bostall Heath and Woods into the ancient Lesnes Abbey Woods with its ponds and streams. We walk past the 11th century Lesnes Abbey ruins into the South Thamesmead Estate and to Southmere Lake. The lake was created in the late 1960’s as part of the drainage system for the new Thamesmead development; there an underground channel takes the remnants of the Wogebourne to the Thames at the Crossness Pumping Station outfall. \nJ D Swann appears courtesy of Calum F Kerr \nTerrain: Long uphill climb at Shooter’s Hill then largely downhill until Bostall Woods and Lesnes Abbey Woods in which there are several steep slopes and stairs. Oxleas Woods and Lesnes Abbey Woods after rain can be particularly muddy so appropriate footwear and weather-appropriate clothing recommended. Binoculars and Recording devices for nature are encouraged. There is a Café/WC at Oxleas Meadows\, Lesnes Abbey has a Café/WC (closes 3.30pm). All subject to Covid-19 Guidelines.

What is it that circulates beneath our feet oozing from the muddy delta of the Thames as we explore the interconnected labyrinth of watery commons intersecting urban spaces\, that flow across\, through and into us? \nThis exhibition will focus on our experience of these watery commons while exploring fluid collective co-creation. You are invited to collaborate in this artistic project to reimagine the city as a watery ecosystem. By re-evaluating the city as a space shaped by water\, we’ll track the nature and extent of the radical changes wrought on the valley’s watery arteries\, while creating alternative visions\, and understandings. \nHydracity also re-imagines the city’s river system as slowly evolving tentacled organism\, much like a hydra’s looping locomotion. By observing water – its capacity to merge fluidity and solidity – we can see it as a regenerative resource and even a metaphor for shifting times.  This ever-changing environment of the aqueous commons reflects something of the hydra-like city\, whose ability to rejuvenate offers overlapping narratives for this complex watery labyrinth. For the exhibition at Thames-side Gallery InspiralLondon creates a unique sculptural labyrinth map that interacts with other activities\, archives\, experiences and with potential walks across the city. \nArtists\, artist groups and collectives have been invited to contribute to Hydracity\, by coming together in this search for our watery commons. The exhibition launches a number of specially commissioned public artworks that includes Hydrodetours guided walks; performances; sound and sculptural installation; performative lectures; films and an interactive watery archive. Together\, making alternative narratives for places\, people and the landscape within London’s Thames basin by immersing ourselves in different ways of understanding the city’s waterways\, and in experiencing the complex ecosystems and surprising biodiversity sustained by them. \nInspiralLondon’s Hydracity is an artistic exploration of London’s urban environment and ecology through on the ground mapping with the aim to create a network of alternative histories\, stories and experiences of the  commons. This collective art project is an opportunity for artists to re-imagine the Thames Delta as a fluid and dream-like ecosystem\, unpredictable\, ever shifting and dissolving and ultimately mysterious. \nPreview: Friday 10 September 2021\, 6-9pm\, exhibition opens Saturday 11 September 2021- Exhibition dates: Saturday 11 – Sunday 26 September 2021   Open Thursday-Sunday\, 12-5pm (except 26 September open until 6pm) \n \n

SUMMARY:Rainham Marshes/Rainham Barges
DESCRIPTION:Rainham Marshes/Rainham Barges\nThis unique artist-led walk and performance starts from Rainham Station\, leading us out along the London Loop pathway\, to the Concrete Barges at Coldharbour Point. Join this exploratory collaboration as part of Estuary Associate programme and Kinetika’s T100 Dreaming. \nThese barges were the site for Bow Gamelan Ensemble’s extraordinary sonic event 51º 29.9’ N \, 0º 11’ E\, performed in 1987. In visiting and re-experiencing this waterlogged war time grave site\, Inspiral’s walk explores aspects of our watery commons; in the ways we memorialise\, preserve\, cover up or alter our environments and the other stories we tell about contested histories. \nOn the day\, InspiralLondon – as a collective – offers an improvised musical performance\, on the edge of the Thames. This unique performative visit will include a brief evocation of the Concrete Barges performance given by Bow Gamelan Ensemble member Anne Bean. We will also be livestreaming and sharing this event experience on our web platform. \nAfterwards\, you are invited to walk with us towards Purfleet\, along the Thames to Mardyke Creek\, to join in Kinetika’s walking tour and celebrations. The route enjoys views of RSPB Rainham Marsh\, and we will be guided by locals along the Estuary to end at High House. Rainham Marshes/Rainham Barges is part of a walking event curated by Kinetika that includes a tour of Purfleet\, a world-food picnic and introductory welcome to Kinetika’s projects including Beach of Dreams. \n \nRainham Concrete Barges were constructed during the Second WW. Their hulls formed from ferroconcrete — concrete reinforced with iron. They were used as oil barges or as floating structures to support temporary docks for D-Day Landings or for other wartime improvised engineering. 16 remaining Barges were given a new lease of life after the storm floods in 1953. Towed back to the Thames\, then sunk\, to shore up damaged flood barriers against future tidal surges. They remain lodged in the mud supporting other migrants: the annual wintering of rock and water pipits\, and roosting sites for other birds. \nConcrete Barges \n51º 29.9’ N \, 0º 11’ E documentary TV event created specifically for an Alter Image (Channel 4) performing Concrete Barges in Rainham\, Essex\, in 1987. The Bow Gamelan Ensemble chose to work with the concrete barges near Rainham where they had previously explored sound on several of their many river trips into the estuary\, recognising the huge differences in sound from low to high tide. They were filmed for over ten hours as the tide ebbed and flowed capturing the massive energy of this amount of incoming water and the ways one could harness this power to shift and shape sound. \nBow Gamelan Ensemble – The artists Anne Bean\, Paul Burwell (1949 – 2007) and Richard Wilson extensively explored Thames riverscapes by boat\, which fired their imaginations. Visions started to germinate and their shared excitement of the countless possibilities within the visual dynamics and unexpected sounds\, often on vast scales\, stimulated the ideas that became embedded in the group DNA. \nKinetika is an internationally renowned company\, with unrivalled reputation for working with local communities on projects that change the way people feel about where they live. From local community walks in Essex to high streets and city squares across the UK\, out to the Great Wall of China\, Ethiopia and West Bengal. \nFor all Inspiral Ticketing visit our: Eventbrite \n \nWatery Investigations Launch as part of Estuary 2021 Associated Programme: see here \n  \n \n  \nPart of Kinetika/T 100 Dreaming – ‘Grow Your Own’ – Purfleet-on-Thames (10am -4pm)\nMeet the Purfleet-on-Thames community and hear about their journeys and connection to the place through the sharing of food\, recipes and music. Together we will capture our dream for a sustainable community by creating a recipe for Purfleet. \nWith contributions from Heavenly Greens Fruit & Veg\, The Backstage Centre\, South Essex College\, local community groups and in partnership with developers PCRL (Purfleet Centre Regeneration Limited)\, walkers are invited to this celebratory event on the theme of sustainable communities\, culminating in a shared picnic made from local produce. \nThis walk split into two parts – with walkers coming from both Purfleet and Rainham.\n10am-12.30pm: Meet at Rainham RSPB. This circular walk to Rainham Concrete barges will include an event hosted by Inspiral London inspired by the Bow Gamelan Ensemble performance in 1987. \n12.30-4pm: Meet at Rainham RSPB. This walk will visit the Heritage and Military Centre for a ‘welcome to Purfleet’ talk and then lead to Heavenly Greens Fruit & Veg stall to meet local residents who will join us on the walk to High House Production Park for a picnic. Heavenly Greens Fruit & Veg customers will share a few of their recipes from around the world.

SUMMARY:Darent Valley Con/fluences to Graves/end
DESCRIPTION:Join Inspiral’s Epic Journey long the Thames and walk the marshland of the south bank from Dartford Marshes. This two part walk starts at Dartford Station and leads us out along the Darent River to its confluence with the Cray River towards the River Thames; then for those adventurous urban explorers continues to the River\, to walk long into the evening and reach Gravesend\, via Greenhithe\, Swanscombe\, Northfleet. The walk takes in an extraordinary inspiring landscape\, across hidden watery terrain and through one of London’s most biodiverse habitats\, while skirting the historic Thames-side.\n \nDarent Valley Confluence (with J D Swann)\n \nFor the first afternoon walk – fully accessible at approximately 2 ½ miles long loop – we are joined by inspiral associate J D Swann who will guide us in all things orniphilosophical. This short walk reveals the contrast between urban environment and its marshy underpinnings\, while allowing us to enjoy the bio-diversity of the watery commons. \n \nCon/fluences to Graves/End (with Charlie Fox) \nThen\, as the walk to the edge of Dartford and Cray Marsh finishes with light refreshments\,  those wishing to return to Dartford will be guided back to the Station. All other long exploratory walkers will be invited on an adventurous night walk along the Thames toward Gravesend. \nAs we pass under the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge dusk arrives\, we head toward Swanscombe Marsh and the ghostly memory of our prehistoric origin. \nLater on\, as we pass through Northfleet by night\, we hear again the sounds of Rosherville Pleasure Gardens. This evening into night walk is approx. 12 miles to arrive at Gravesend around 9.30pm.  Trains run to North Kent or back to London. There are earlier stops on way – including Greenhithe and Northfleet stations. \nPlease bring an evening picnic and/or refreshments and some sensible\, comfortable walking boots or equivalent. \nDepending on Covid rules – and group walking permitted – the walk will be managed in two parts by experienced walk guides. Both parts of this walking event start from Dartford Station but visit https://www.inspirallondon.com/events/ or Eventbrite ticketing for up to date information. Suggested Donation to support work of InspiralLondon CIC £6\n \n \n  \nWatery Investigations Launch as part of Estuary 2021 Associated Programme: see here \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Towards the Watery (H)edges of Gravesend
DESCRIPTION:A Hydrodetour  collaboration – Towards the Watery (H)edges of Gravesend.\nThis exploratory walk launches from Gravesend’s unique art centre LV21 and after the morning’s mystery tour ‘Trail of the Blue Porcupine’ (co-created by IL associate artist Sarah Sparkes). \nAs the mystery trail ends InspiralLondon leads walkers from St Andrews Quayside by LV21\, further out into the watery (H)edges of Gravesend – to (H)igham Marshes and in a loop to St. Marys\, Higham. \n Together we explore this unique environment in all its diverse unkempt beauty\, traversing the lattice work of waterways and ditches\, while listening into the other inhabitants of the Marshes. \nPlease bring a light picnic and/or refreshments and some comfortable walking boots or equivalent. The walk will take approximately 4 hours (Either returning to Gravesend Station or to Higham Station). \nThis walk is the first in a series of experimental and/or public walks for Hydracity investigations: \nInspiralLondon’s tours are unique artist-led walks that offer new ways of experiencing our city’s watery ecosystem. Embarking upon another voyage of discovery on foot\, whether in waders\, with boots or by boat – to investigate – on the fluid oozing ground\, something of the Thames Valley Basin’s rich watery commons. Together\, we detour and explore among its watery terrain\, in order to understand its urban complexity and its hidden variety\, but also to create a new sense of value and wonder within its beautiful biodiversity. \nIn these times of rapid extinction\, climate upheaval and ecological crisis Hydrodetours offer you a time to celebrate and a time to share the extraordinary and unexpected\, hidden within the Metropole’s shifting watery veins. By sharing alternative narratives and experiences we invite you to navigate these fluid times\, building together walking rafts to the future. \nA full list of Walks can be found HERE \nThe Trail of the Blue Porcupine. \nIn the morning from 11 am – c.1pm you are invited to pay homage to former and contemporary fauna of the marshy landscapes by joining The Trail of The Blue Porcupine: A collaboration by Poet James M’Kay and IL associate artist Sarah Sparkes. This is a Siltings Commission for LV21. \nBring your trusty smartphone to communicate with Blue Porcupine HQ\, as you decipher the clues and follow the trail of Porcupines on a mystery tour of Gravesend. Start point: LV21. \nTrail length: about 2 miles\, duration: dependent on puzzle-solving ability. Unleashed at 11am\, June 5th. \nSEE for more details LV21 \n \nDepending on Covid rules the walk is managed in two parts – the afternoon walk is led by experienced walk guides. Both parts of this walking event start from the Riverside by LV21 but visit Estuary Website or Eventbrite ticketing for up to date information. \n  \nWatery Investigations Launch as part of Estuary 2021 Associated Programme: see here \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:InspiralLondon Hydracity Streamings (for REVEIL 8)
DESCRIPTION:InspiralLondon Hydracity streamings:  \nFrom 7.15pm (GMT) join InspiralLondon Hydracity streamings as we explore and bivouac across a variety of urban\, suburban and semi-urban sites – to listen in to a revolution of watery commons – from dawn to dusk\, back to dawn.\nFor soundcamp‘s extraordinary Reveil 8 Inspiraller’s collaborate on this collective duskscape; among water\, in watery commons\, by celebrating humid biodiversity and in a collective on the ground listening – with four mics tracking dusk\, for the audience to mix from 7.15pm to 9 pm on May 1st. \n\nStarting 19.15 London Time (UTC+1) \nFrom North Marseille Chorus (Julie Demuer & Charlie Fox) – we will be wading long\, in the vicinity of North Marseille’s unkempt streams and watery hollows; ending at Miramar in L’Estaque where Cezanne’s umbrella pines stand still – under the sudden threat of being cut down – to be replaced by containers. \nFocus from 19.45 on Thamesmead Canal Chorus\, (Calum F Kerr & Miyuki Kasahara) from the watery commons of Thamesmead\, around Southmere lake teaming with coot\, geese\, grebe\, moorhen\, swan\, tufted duck. Tracking above ground and below ground watery habitats\, canals and pipes. \nFocus from 20.15 on Peck Marshland Chorus (Rachel Gomme) ingress/outgress from Peckham Common reflects on free flow/restriction of watery commons. Following the course of the Peck Stream from Earl Sluice back to its source on One Tree Hill. \nFocus from 20.35 on Earley Chorus (Sarah Sparkes and Ian Thompson) will bivouac in what remains of the ancient Forest of Earley – a precious strip of woodland lost in the depths of suburbia next to a meandering stream that flows into the Thames via the river Loddon. \n\nOur Chorus Streamings introduction includes some occassional live discussion: of the listening sights; the critical and practical aspects of Hydracity explorations; collective ways of listening inspired by soundcamp; the relationship of our ‘on the ground mapping’ with ‘on the ground listening’; auraldiversities and the otherness that oozes from the watery commons.\n\n\n\n\n\nHydracity brings artists and public together to investigate London’s watery network\, the interlocking ideas & currents that flow in/out the Thames. We focus on collective co-creation through on the ground mapping\, ecology\, the environment and placemaking; creating a network of alternative histories for our watery commons that invite audiences to collaborate in re-imagining the city as a fluid ecosystem\, by exploring: other narratives for places\, people\, landscape within Thames Valley; novel ways to experience together and understand the city’s waterways; complex ecosystems of cohabiting/cooperating; our own body as watery ecosystem within wider watery commons – in the merging of solidity and fluidity; water as a regenerative resource for shifting times. All activities reflect something of the hydra-like city\, whose legendary regenerative ability offers overlapping narratives for this complex watery network. \n\nInspiralLondon Hydracity Streamings from: \nJulie Demuer\, Charlie Fox\, Rachel Gomme\, Calum F Kerr\, Miyuki Kasahara\, Sarah Sparkes\, Ian Thompson \nStart: 01/05 19:00 UTC+1 for full REVEIL Platform starting at 5am 1st May broadcasting for 24+1 hours \nVarious Locations: London & Reading (UK)\, Marseille (France)

SUMMARY:Hydracity Inspiral Detour 3 - Woolwich Arsenal Sailor Forbes Spirit Guide no. 236
DESCRIPTION:Sailor Forbes Spirit Guide no. 236 – Hydracity Inspiral Detour exploration: \nA R&D walk for Hydracity – as Sailor Forbes Spirit Guide no. 236 – walking the Thames Path from Woolwich Old Naval Docks to the old pillbox bunker directly opposite the Barking Creek outfall from the Roding River\, with detouring: this walk uncovered\, and reimagining\, the City of London’s origins on the South-Eastern banks of Woolwich sound. Here under the secret city of the Royal Arsenal\, and reburied under the concrete of Riverside development lie the remains of the pre-Roman Celtic city. \n \nIt is here that the shaft of Woolwich foot tunnel\, reaching down past the alluvial soils into a shifting gravel and clay\, echoes with the tales of pre-Roman civilisation; a port HAVEN on the Thames\, hillforts aligned on solstice lines\, Pythagorean geometry and Iron Age meridian lines. These other histories buried beneath a shifting Thames line\, now hidden beneath the military and naval industrial complex or overlain by regenerated apartment blocks describe another pre-Greenwich meridian\, with roads and communication lines dictated by a strict solar geometry (as described in Graham Robb’s The Ancient Paths- Discovering the Lost map of Celtic Europe): \n‘Because of the constant threat from treasure-hunters\,’ the discovery had been kept secret since 1986…(now) the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit could reveal that ‘a major fortified settlement’ had been discovered on the Woolwich Power Station site: Constructed about 250 BC\, centuries before the foundation of the City of Londinium by the Romans\, this major site on the south bank of the River Thames controlled the river for over 200 years. …The complete defensive circuit would have enclosed an area of at least 15-17 acres… dominated a wide area and was effectively the capital of the London Basin for part of the Iron Age. (quoted from G. Robb 2013: 260-261) \nSearching among the relandscaped ground between Beresford Street and the wall of the Thames foreshore flood defences you can look up at the rising ground above the Woolwich Ferry\, near the foot tunnel exit\, and see the promontory of St Mary Magdalene Church Yard or to the East the rising ground of old Woolwich. Undoubtedly this location on the Thames\, looking out to sea\, was an ideal site for settlement. Located on the last stretch of river before the more unpredictable surging tide around the narrowing bend of the Isle of Dogs that low marshy ground\, formerly known as Stebunheath\, you can see far out along the Estuary. Other oppida – on the reaches of the River Roding and those yet to be located – suggest a complex of settlements entirely independent of the Roman foundation of London the City- as the original centres of a Celtic metropolis along the Thames. \nSo\, Sailor Forbes’ impression that the Woolwich foot tunnel Southern shaft marks the centre of a pre-historic London is no longer to be doubted. \nPart 2 Flotsam to Jetson; Sailor Forbes Spirit Guide no. 236 walk will be launched in Autumn 2021 \n \n

SUMMARY:Hydracity Detour 4 - Micro locations of Watery confluences.
DESCRIPTION:Following Hydracity Detour 3 IL curates another series of explorations of watery vents and veins across the Metropole. Designed to coincide\, as a number of individuals/artists\, explorers and walkers\, join together in a simultanaeous on the ground mapping – to plot and flow along some of London’s least known or hidden waterways with the aim of recording various micro environments and confluences – in exploring potential bio-diversity\, difference and hidden beauty found within the Watery Commons of Thames Valley basin system. \n \nFor Saturday 27 February 2021 – Sailor Forbes voyages along the Darent to the confluence of the River Cray and down to Dartford Creek. (Part 1 of InspiralLondon 3 part Darent Valley Walk). \nAn echo of the Wogebourne River flowing down to Thamesmead – R&D on the ground mapping by Calum F Kerr \nAnd walking in and on the marshy bogland of River Peck – further investigations by Rachel Gomme \nAnd on Sunday 28 February a tracing of the Tyburn along its lower reaches\, entering the marshy floodplain of the Thames south of Green Park. One branch of the stream wandering toward the Thames at the northern end of Whitehall while its twin entered south of the site of current House of Parliament. Between the forked flow of the Tyburn\, the small gravel island of Westminster. \nFrom the 13th century the Tyburn supplied water for London through pipeways made of elm trunks. Now\, entirely drained off into the sewer and hidden underground\, the Tyburn flowed west of the modern Marble Arch\, near to the northeastern corner where the Middlesex Gallows once stood as a place of public execution.
